The Pocono Health Foundation annually awards grants that support health and human service programs as well as students pursuing a career in healthcare. These grants have been made possible through the generosity of many individuals who have invested in the future quality of life of our community. Following is a list of grants currently available: Dr. Claus G. Jordan Grants Dr. Claus G. Jordan Endowment, established in 1995, is dedicated to helping individuals and institutions that are committed to Pocono Medical Center and the community it serves. Dr. Claus G. Jordan grants are awarded in June each year to innovative community health outreach programs and physician leadership initiatives. Applications are by invitation only. The grant application period is from January through March. In 2009, the 6 recipients received over $15,800 in grant money. Dr. Alberta Finch Grants Dr. Alberta Finch Children's Endowment was established in 1998, to create a legacy of caring for others, especially mothers and children who might otherwise not be able to afford medical care. Dr. Alberta Finch grants are awarded to programs that provide educational tools and services that foster individual responsibility for improving family health and wellness. Dr. Finch helps choose the grant recipients each year. In 2009, 4 agencies that directly helped the children of the community were awarded a total of $2,500. Nursing Scholarships Mr. Hughes established the R. Dale Hughes Nursing Scholarship Endowment in 1991 to encourage outstanding nursing students to establish a career in nursing at Pocono Medical Center. A $4,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a nursing student entering the final year of their nursing program. The Jennie Cramer Nursing Scholarship Endowment was established in 1992 by the Cramer Family to enable Pocono Medical Center to recruit outstanding nursing students. A $1,500 scholarship is awarded each year to a nursing student entering the final year of their nursing program.
The Pocono Medical Center Board of Directors established The Robert A. Gordon Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment in 1991 in recognition of Mr. Gordon's outstanding service as a dedicated board member. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a nursing student entering the final year of their nursing program. The R. Dale Hughes Scholarship, Robert A. Gordon Scholarship, and Jennie Cramer Scholarship are all awarded in June. Applicants must be enrolled in the last two years of a nursing program, be in the upper 15% of his/her class and have a 3.2 grade point or above. Applications are accepted between January and March. Dr. Elmo J. Lilli Memorial Healthcare Scholarship Dr. Lilli had been practicing family and geriatric medicine in the Poconos since 1959 and was Chief of Medical Staff at the Hospital from 1978 to 1980. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who will pursue a career as a radiology technologist, nuclear medicine technologist, MRI technologist, medical technologist, ultrasound technologist, CT technologist, interventional technologist, radiation therapist, or a registered nurse. Applicants must have a minimum grade average of B or higher and must be accepted into an accredited healthcare program. PHF is proud to offer this scholarship in honor of Dr. Lilli, who touched the lives of so many people through his many years of service practicing medicine in the Poconos.
William B. Cramer Medical Staff Equipment Endowment The Medical Endowment Fund provides members of the Pocono Medical Center active staff an opportunity to submit a request for the purchase of medical equipment each year at PHS. All equipment purchased through the fund will be the property of Pocono Medical Center. The grant is being funded by contributions designated to the Medical Equipment Endowment Fund. Holiday Tree Lighting Grants Holiday Tree Lighting Grants are awarded each year to United Way of Monroe County agencies that provide innovative programs that serve the youth of our community. The funding for the awards are made possible from the sale of tree ornaments for the Pocono Medical Center Holiday Tree. The Holiday Tree Lighting is done in partnership between the Pocono Health Foundation and the Rotary Club of the Smithfields. Grants up to $1,000 are awarded each year at the Tree Lighting event, which is held on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. |
